He performs the Chagas radioimmune precipitation assay (Chagas RIPA) on a fee-for-service basis in his laboratory at the University of Iowa. Also, Dr Kirchhoff has licensed the Chagas RIPA technology to Quest Diagnostics in Chantilly, Virginia, where RIPA testing is available for donor specimens. In addition, he has licensed proprietary chimeric recombinant Trypanosoma cruzi proteins to Abbott Laboratories. The licensed proteins are being used as target antigens in the Abbott PRISM^® Chagas assay and the Abbott Chagas immunoblot assay, both of which are pending for Food and Drug Administration approval.
